Mark makes traditional, yet contemporary, salt-glazed and alkaline glazed wood-fired stoneware pottery. He creates a full range of fine quality tableware (plates, bowls, mugs), vases, serving bowls and lidded jars, as well as his signature "Big Pots" - large planters, tall vases, jars and obelisks that range from 18" to 62" tall!

For the seventy-fifth firing of the original kiln, Mark has made several massive vases and planters, tall "medieval" pitchers, Northern Thai-style jars, small obelisks, several dozen iced tea tumblers, cereal bowls, dinner plates, and more than 200 friendly mugs (including some swirl).
Apprentices Joseph Sand, Alex Matisse, and Eryn Prospero
have made lots of spectacular pots too!

Hewitt's work has been featured in the Smithsonian Magazine and on the cover of American Craft Magazine, he has written extensively in the ceramic press, and has exhibited in London, New York and Tokyo, as well as throughout the US. He is well-represented in museum and private collections.

Hewitt's work has been featured in the Smithsonian Magazine and on the cover of American Craft Magazine,tion with Nancy Sweezy entitled “The Potter’s Eye: Art and Tradition in North Carolina Pottery,” at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC, October 30, 2005 March 19, 2006. UNC Press published a well-illustrated catalogue/book with the same title. Mark's work will be featured in the upcoming PBS series, "Craft in America," and in the accompanying book and travelling exhibition. The show aired nationally in May 2007.
